Fun Fact Friday! #163

Ah, Frozen. I fear to mention this movie on my blog until the hype had leveled out. Hopefully, my timing is good. 🙂

Frozen has undoubtedly become one of the most popular Disney movies of all time, and has broken its fair share of records.

  1. It is the highest-earning animated movie ever.
  2. It is the fastest selling home entertainment release ever.
  3. Its soundtrack is the first to sell a million copies in 2014. Source

Weee ruuuulllee!

Regardless of your feelings about the movie or not, it’s hard to dispute that it has an amazing amount of accolades. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy the movie to this day! For those of you who are not impressed with the record breaking facts above, let me give you a more interesting fact geared towards the Disney movie world of facts (AKA my favorite kind).

Believe it not, but after so many movies and so many songs, Frozen supplied us with the first ever duet sung between a Princess and a Villain. That’s right! The song “Love is an Open Door” not only provided us with a million adorable daddy-daughter duos on YouTube, but it entered a new realm of heroine and villain relationships.

Not so fast, Anna!

Not so fast, Anna!

I think it’s really cool that Disney has been involving the Princes in the movies more than usual. Even if some of them are meany heads. :p

Top 10 Non-Verbal Animals!

I like to think that the world would be an amazing, much better place if animals were able to talk. And of course, within the magical world of Disney, they can! Well, most of them can. But even though some characters are not equipped with the ability to speak, they have still managed to win us over time and time again. These animated characters come to life through their movements and facial expressions, so I searched the web to find the best clips I could of each. Here is my Top 10 favorite animals that didn’t need to say a word to make me love them!

#10. Cri-kee from Mulan

crikee gif 2

Mulan had an interesting entourage with her as she entered battle, none of which were what they claimed to be. And even though Cri-kee isn’t truly a lucky cricket, he certainly is one of the bravest little bugs I’ve ever seen. He stays by Mulan’s side as she battles warriors, ridicule, and her own demons. Cri-kee quickly becomes Mushu’s pal, and while Mushu talks to much, Cri-kee’s silence allows him to gain a presence all his own.

#9. Kevin from Up

Kevin's a...girl?

Kevin’s a…girl?

Kevin’s a… girl? She certainly is, and she’s a girl with a mission. She needs to care for her babies while avoiding capture, and risks her safety for her little ones like any mother would. Kevin’s storyline is truly complex and fascinating when you think about it. For a bird who can’t verbalize her situation, she somehow stirs up a feeling of urgency when she is kidnapped. Still, she also makes us laugh at her weird antics and devotion to Russell. After learning about Kevin’s love for chocolate, it’s no surprise to me that she ended up being a girl!

#8. Meeko from Pocahontas

Meeko's a goofball!

Meeko’s a goofball!

Mischievous Meeko doesn’t seemed fazed by the fact that there is a battle going on over his homeland. All he’s concerned about it getting his next meal. He will be loyal to whomever has the best treats, a trick that John Smith quickly learned. But this little raccoon symbolizes something greater than a cheeky night bandit. He is a friend to Pocahontas, and a friend to all the creatures around him. His silly ways break the tension between Pocahontas and John, and help them reach an understanding.

#7. Figaro from Pinocchio

Tra la la little Figaro.

Tra la la little Figaro.

When characters don’t speak in films, they need to have wonderful expressions. Figaro shows his discontent when he is asked to climb out of bed to open the window. He shows annoyance when he has to wait to eat. He’s a fickle cat with many emotions! Gepetto has a very whimsical and enchanting home, full of trinkets and toys, yet this cat is one of the most interesting things in the little house! His attitude is lazy and blasé, the way most real cats are perceived. But Figaro is also a funny, curious kitten who never stops exploring. His adventures might be silent, but they are fun to watch!

#6. Sven from Frozen

Reindeer are better than people, Sven?

Reindeer are better than people, Sven?

He’s a reindeer who loves his human Kristoff so much, he even allows Kristoff to speak for him! But happy-go-lucky Sven doesn’t mind at all. He’s grown so close to Kristoff that he can even participate in songs while keeping completely silent. Sven is a good guy to have around. While most of the time he is happy to be helping, and only asks for a carrot now and then, he knows when to put his foot down and demand attention. Like when Kristoff was about to leave Princess Anna without going back to fight for her. Sven stepped out of his laid-back self and silently forced Kristoff to head back to the kingdom. His inability to speak does not make him a 2-dimensional background character. No, Sven has a ton of personality, and makes me laugh with his goofy ways!

#5. Nana from Peter Pan

nana 3

I wish she could have gone with them!

Growing up, I always wished that I could have Nana babysit me in place of the snarky teenage girlsI was left with. Nana is a perfect example of delivering a message with only her expressions. You can see that she cares and loves her Darling’s just as she would her own puppies. Her meticulous care of the nursery is something she is proud of. And you can also see her heartbreak when she is forced to stay outside like… well, like a dog. Without saying a word, Nana runs through the spectrum of human emotions so well that you might forget that she isn’t a real Nanny.

#4. Maximus from Tangled

This horse has got a mission!

This horse has got a mission!

He’s a horse who thinks he’s a soldier who acts like a dog. Hm, interesting? Maximum has a lot of moral convictions, more than even some human characters do. He’s a rule-follower, and horse who sees right and wrong as black and white, there is no gray area. He will uphold the law to the letter. The best example of this is when we see the moral struggle Flynn Rider puts Maximus in when he leaves him a bag of apples that he bought “most of.” Maximus is perplexed because he doesn’t want to eat stolen apple. How can a horse who doesn’t speak translate such a strong moral compass? It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it?

#3. Abu from Aladdin

You know what he's saying without even saying it!

You know what he’s saying without even saying it!

Where would Aladdin be without his silent partner-in-crime? He understands the way of the world, and knows how to get what he wants. Abu is a clever monkey, but he struggles with his lust for gold and the finer things in life. He, like Maximus, comes to many trials of right and wrong. His thieving certainly got the best of him every now and then, but deep down Abu is a loyal and caring companion. He is also very animated and can tell a story, and his feelings, just by acting them out. Pretty impressive!

#2. Dumbo from Dumbo

But I be done seen about everything, when I see an elephant fly.

But I be done seen about everything, when I see an elephant fly.

Dumbo proves that you don’t need to speak to star in your own movie! This little guy defies all odds when he “flies”, quiets the naysayers, and creates his own path in the world, all without mumbling one word. Dumbo grows up right in front of our eyes, learns harsh lessons about the world, but takes it all in stride. I don’t believe there will ever be another leading star that can silently win our hearts the way that Dumbo has.

#1. Pluto from… lots of stuff!

Instead of roses, we threw him dogs bones for his #1 win!

Instead of roses, we threw him dogs bones for his #1 win!

Mickey Mouse’s loyal dog, Pluto, is my number one choice because he encompasses all that personality throughout the decades without needing to open his mouth to speak. He’s naturally a happy dog, but throughout the years we have seen him get angry, sad, confused, and pretty goofy, too. Pluto always makes me smile when I see him. This dog has starred in many cartoons and shorts, and his big ears and dopey smile are recognized across the world. He is the most famous dog who never speaks that I can think of, and he’s also adorable, too!

Top 10 Disney Princesses

As in introduction to my newest section for this blog, I thought it was only appropriate to begin with a list of my personal pick of top 10 Disney Princesses. I also added a tagline to each princess which hopefully encapsulates what I find to be their message and why I placed them where I did. Please leave me your thoughts or personal picks!

Special thanks to The White’s List Blog for the idea!

Nala - "BE STRONG"

Nala – “BE STRONG”

10. Nala – “Be Strong”

One of the most overlooked princesses, Nala might not be human, but she still deserves her spot as a DP – or better yet, a Disney Queen. Nala is a survivor. She grew up under evil Scar’s rule and watched her beloved home waste away before her eyes. She has a clear distinction for what is right, and wasn’t afraid to put Simba in his place. Because of her tough love attitude, she helped in bringing Simba to his senses and had a hand in reinstating the rightful King of Pride Rock.

Rapunzel - "LIVE YOUR LIFE"

Rapunzel – “LIVE YOUR LIFE”

9. Rapunzel – “Live Your Life”

She has a dream! This girl is cunning and resourceful (hello, frying pan!). But more importantly, she’s determined. Rapunzel is a tad socially awkward, which is to be expected after spending your whole life in a tower. But that awkwardness was a refreshing change to the eloquent princesses that proceeded her. She’s down-to-earth and makes a more approachable princess, so you can bet that she will rule her kingdom fairly and gracefully. What more could one ask for?

Merida - "STAND UP AND SPEAK UP"

Merida – “STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN”

8. Merida – “Stand Up For What You Believe In”

Probably the most fiery princess on this list, Merida is determined to keep control of her own destiny. She’s a headstrong tomboy who would rather run through the forest and shoot arrows than get dressed up and meet boys. I believe that Merida has redefined princesses for the younger generation. Her stubbornness is actually quiet a virtue because she doesn’t bend to what others expect her to be, and that’s a great message to deliver.

Ariel - "FOLLOW YOUR HEART"

Ariel – “FOLLOW YOUR HEART”

7. Ariel – “Follow Your Heart”

On the surface, she might appear to be a spoiled brat who makes stupid, rash decisions. But give the heartsick girl a break! She is following her heart and going against her family and society because she knows that she’s the only person responsible for her happiness. Ariel is a true rebel! She has an adventurous soul that cannot be stopped. She had to make a lot of tough choices and should be commended for her bravery. Way to go!

Jasmine - "BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP"

Jasmine – “BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP”

6. Jasmine – “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep”

She grew up in the lap of luxury, yet she never judged Aladdin for being a “street rat”. Jasmine wanted to be one of the people so badly that she ran away from everything she knew. I think that Jasmine is very humble and modest, but she doesn’t get the credit for being that way. She teaches such an important lesson, and that is to not judge a book by its cover.

Cinderella - KINDNESS IS ALWAYS REWARDED

Cinderella – KINDNESS IS ALWAYS REWARDED

5. Cinderella – “Kindness Is Always Rewarded”

She is the model of “Disney Princess”! Cinderella is beautiful and kind, but what I like most about her is her caring nature towards all the animals around her – including the mice. Her selflessness is admirable. While she’s always majestic, Cinderella does crack a joke every once in a while. Imagine a world where everyone treated each other with respect and were courteous. We could all learn a lot from her!

Elsa - "DON'T HIDE WHO YOU ARE"

Elsa – DON’T HIDE WHO YOU ARE

4. Elsa – “Don’t Hide Who You Are”

Another Queen, I know. Elsa is such an complex character that I related to in some aspect, albeit vague for sure! The eldest daughter does accrue certain pressures that are excused from the younger siblings, and her devotion to her family in trying to be the best that she can be for the sake of their reputation is a heavy burden to carry. When she finally breaks herself away from the figurative chains, I literally started to cry. But Elsa learned that she needed to open up and rely on the people who loved her. I think her character showed some of the most growth throughout the film, and it was empowering to get a peek at the Queen’s insecurities and then watch her overcome them.

Mulan - FAMILY IS NUMBER ONE

Mulan – FAMILY IS NUMBER ONE

3. Mulan – “Family is Number One”

Can you say badass? Mulan is hands down the toughest DP around. She shows the utmost nobility when she puts her life on the line just to save her father’s. Mulan doesn’t want anything for herself. She isn’t looking for a prince, or chasing a wispy dream. This girl is protecting her family, and going into battle knowing that she might not ever come home. She teaches us that we can do anything, we just have to try. I think she is an amazing role model. Mulan – you rock!

Tiana - HARD WORK PAYS OFF

Tiana – HARD WORK PAYS OFF

2. Tiana – “Hard Work Pays Off”

What can I say? My favorite DP quality is independence, and Tiana has that over any princess on any list. Tiana is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get dirty. She never expects any hand outs, instead she just goes to work and keeps her eye on the prize. That endurance is so substantial, especially in today’s instant-gratification generation. She is smart, tough, and strong-willed. In my opinion, Tiana doesn’t get nearly enough recognition.

Belle - BE YOURSELF

Belle – BE YOURSELF

1. Belle – “Be Yourself”

She’s an outcast who fights against the mainstream. She walks down her own path, and isn’t bothered by the fact that she stands out. Belle cannot be sold on a safe, cozy journey. She wants to be out there, having an adventure! She is looking for more to her life, and inspires us all to not settle or conform. Her tagline is “Be Yourself”, and that’s the best advice anyone can give.

Disney Fact #120

Apparently, both Frozen Princesses auditioned for the role of their rebellious predecessor, Rapunzel, in the movie Tangled. Kristen Bell, who does the voice of Princess Anna, and Idina Menzel, who does the voice of Queen Elsa, both took a shot at the role meant for Mandy Moore.

I'm so popular!

Menzel’s audition for the role of Rapunzel was recorded, and that recording actually helped her get the role of the Ice Queen!
